4/15/04: Garden info and tips
This week’s warm rain blew in spring, Last night the peepers were peeping for the first time
this year. A few nights late, does that mean spring will be a few days late? It does mean
that its time to rake off the protective mulch we put on our perennials and strawberries
last fall.
UPDATES
Last year my fish emulsion was plugging up my automatic waters so I started using a miracle
grow type fertilizer on my flowers. My plants were not doing well. I had my water tested
and it tested very hard. Scott Company said the water was so hard it was tying up the
nutrients in the soil. I changed to a very expensive high-powered fertilizer they
recommended. My plants grew very lush and large, too lush for my liking. This year I’m
using seafood compost from Sunrise Compost in my annual and vegetable seedlings. Doug went
to Thorndike and got me twelve yards of Kinny’s compost to use for my perennials and shrubs
and in containers. I have a different brand of fish emulsion and use it whenever I water.
My plants look great. The state inspector was here today and agreed with me. She said,
“Whatever you’re doing, keep doing it.”
